Your peer review – which should be in the form of a letter – is a writing assignment all its own,
and it will be graded. Together with the last two peer reviews, it makes up 10% of your overall
grade for the semester. Late peer reviews will not receive any credit.
Writing Your Peer Review
Prewriting
Remember that with this paper, the audience has shifted. While you are still a member of your
partner’s audience, the audience extends beyond you to a group of strangers: scholars who are
members of our discourse community and who are interested either in the primary text you are
writing about or the questions you’re raising.
You may not have read your partner’s primary text, but most members of the audience will have.
With that said, your partner’s paper should provide enough information about the primary text to
allow you to follow their argument.
As before, print out your partner’s essay and read it closely, annotating as you go. Have a
“conversation” with your partner in the margins of their paper. Identify the places where you are
confused; where you need more information; where you need more evidence, analysis, or
interpretation; where there isn’t a solid transition from one idea, or paragraph, to the next; or
where your partner hasn’t persuaded you of something. This step is about responding in real time
to your peer’s paper.
