This assignment has two parts.
PART 1:
Write a 250-to-500-word press release about a newsworthy announcement or event from a school, company, charitable organization or institution.
You may dream up the announcement — and the group that is sponsoring it — but the announcement and the organization must be believable.
Your release must answer the essential questions: who, what, where, when, why.
You’ll need to include quotes from at least two people who are connected with the organizer and the event itself.
One of the quotes should come from a person who works for the organization, such as the president; a trustee; the vice president of community affairs; a spokesperson for the event, etc.
The second quote should from someone outside of the organization who is connected in some way. If its a fundraiser, it could be a celebrity who has a personal connection to the group’s work. If it’s a pep rally for a homecoming or cancer research , it could feature prominent alumni. Either way, we need to learn why they are endorsing this or why they will be appearing.
Again, make these interviews, like the event itself, plausible.
The release must use the inverted pyramid structure.
The press release should follow the following format:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (or EMBARGOED UNTIL Date)
Headline — Make it attention-grabbing
Subhead
Contact: Name of PR Person (That’s you!), 732-123-1234 (you can use that number)
Dateline: (City, State), Date (written as an abbreviated month, day as a numeral, year. Example: Nov. 12, 2019)
Body of Release: A press release is designed to convince an editor or reporter to cover the story. Convince them that your event deserves coverage.
Information about the company or organization that is behind the event. For example:
About Company Name, Inc., LLC, Ltd, etc.
Company Name, based in Dover, N.J., is the U.S. subsidiary of Bigger Company Co., Ltd., Toronto, Canada, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of computer peripherals. Established in 1987, Company Name, Inc. markets headphones, keyboards, displays, and other consumer electronic products. For more information, visit companyname.com
PART 2:
Write a social media post for the same event which you’re announcing or promoting in your press release.
Remember that the purpose of this post is to convince the PUBLIC to want to share the story with their friends and followers and/or motivate them to participate themselves.
You can write this part for either Facebook (250 characters max) or Twitter (140 characters max).
Remember to use an active voice.
You must also include two hashtags that are easily understandable. Examples: #short #memorable #easytoread
