Select one of these themes as a focus for your essay. In this paper, your purpose will be to compare two cultures, the Hispanic culture and your chosen movie, and your own culture (most likely, U.S. culture). You should:
Make a point about this topic that you believe is important. This point should be clearly stated in your thesis statement.
Explain that position to your reader with supporting examples.
Cite your sources as appropriate – this includes in text citations and a list of sources used.
Avoid stereotyping, which is the attribution of characteristics of an individual to all members of a group. Most stereotypes are based upon ignorance or limited information. Just because you met someone once who thought a certain way, you cannot generalize that person’s opinion to the entire culture from which he or she comes.
Instead, talk about general characteristics of a cultural group, without attributing characteristics to every member of the group. Recognize that there is cultural diversity in every population. Consider the reactions of different members of the family in La Dama del Alba. These family members are all coming from the same culture and have been raised in the same small town.
To arrive at your point of view, consider the attitudes toward these ideas that are embodied in these themes such as where they come from, what they lead people to think and do, why they persist, etc., in the Hispanic world.
Your essay should be organized into paragraphs including an introduction, at least two body paragraphs and a conclusion. See rubric below. The introduction should capture the reader’s interest and contain a concise thesis statement. Your body paragraphs should include examples from the texts, movie and/or your experience that support the position stated in your thesis statement, along with explanations as to how they illustrate or support your thesis statement. It is not enough to simply provide examples, you must explain what makes the example significant to your stated position. The conclusion should not introduce any new ideas, but rather sum up those already presented. It may re-state the thesis.
Be sure to word your point of view as a clear statement of opinion.
Note: Do not “re-tell” the plot. This assignment is not asking for a summary of the movie.
