Module 13 involves viewing 7 parts of a Nat Geo Documentary entitled ‘We Are What We Eat’. This documentary, broken down into 7 – 8 minute video ‘chapters’, is based on where photographer Matthieu Paley traveled to document the various foods of groups of people who live and survive in drastically less populated and harsh weather areas of the world. These videos include pictures, video and discussion of native people harvesting both plants AND animals.
Students are asked to remember that this is the way of life for these groups of people and that this assignment asks students to think critically about these groups of people, their ethics and how they work for their food and for their survival, not whether or not harvesting animals is appropriate. Students should also consider the Social Contract Theory from last week and be continually thinking about whether or not it is appropriate to apply our belief systems from the United States about food and agriculture to these groups of people. Pictures and videos that will be seen are in NO WAY horrific, per say, but students should be prepared for mild views of animal harvesting.
