There are three parts to the project: an outline of the reading (one page), the argumentative paper (2 pages 550 words), and the bibliography. READING OUTLINE On a separate page, construct an outline of the reading as a tiered bulleted/numbered list. At a minimum, you must isolate A) the conclusion of the author’s argument (their thesis)—what the author is trying to prove or convince/inform the reader of; and B) the basic premises of the author’s argument—what reasons the author provides for their conclusion. You must also include definitions of any terms that the author uses in their argument. Beyond the basic argument outline and definitions, you may include other supplemental information like helpful examples, passages that elaborate on important points, pithy and insightful remarks, or brief tangents from the main discussion—anything else that you may want to use in your project. You must critically evaluate the reading. Consider the merits of the author’s argument and decide whether you think the argument is strong or weak by examining its premises. Your thesis should be either A) identical to the author’s conclusion, B) a slight modification of the author’s conclusion though generally agreeing with it, C) the complete opposite of the author’s conclusion, or D) a denial of the author’s conclusion despite finding some merits in it. Regardless of your thesis, you will still have to engage with the author’s premises in order to argue whether or not they sufficiently suppor‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍t the author’s conclusion. Make sure you provide appropriate in-text citations and also a bibliography (or works cited) listing all the sources that you use.
